Madeleine Martiniello
b. March 10, 1989, Melbourne, Australia.

BIOGRAPHY:   Madeleine Martiniello is a Melbourne-based filmmaker, working across documentary and artist cinema.

After studying literature during her undergraduate degree, she eventually realised that she could combine her love of cinema with her journalistic impulse, and enrolled in the Master of Film & Television (Documentary) at the Victorian College of the Arts.

Madeleine’s short films have screened at festivals and galleries in Melbourne, Sydney, London, New York, Bologna (Italy), Port Louis (Mauritius) and Verin (Spain). She is currently directing the ABC iView Arts Bites series, The Unmissables, and is in development on her first feature documentary, Palazzo di Cozzo, supported by Screen Australia and Film Victoria.

Madeleine is also a founding member of the Artist Film Workshop, an artist-run collective in Melbourne that provides resources for working with analogue film. Since 2014, she has programmed the group’s public screening series of experimental documentary and artist films, with a focus on mining the NFSA’s non-theatrical archive.

CRITICAL OVERVIEW:   Sensitive to the quotidian, Madeleine’s work is inspired by people and places out of time, while exploring the complexities of memory and nostalgia.

Her subjects are usually uneasy in their contemporary time and space: from long-term missing people to sailors on shore leave, or abandoned industrial sites to aging cult icons.

Stylistically, Madeleine employs a wide range of documentary practices depending on her subject, from observational and interview based storytelling, through to the expanded potentials of experimental cinema.

She hopes to one day find the happy space in-between.
