Tender Passage SYNOPSIS Tender Passage is a romantic drama about a man wishing to resume a relationship with a woman after an 18-month break. Robert, an intelligent but unsettled man in his mid 30s, works as a computer programmer for a successful IT company in Sydney. He is about to commence in a new position for the company, having recently been promoted. Away from the office, he lives in a modern apartment on the Bondi beachfront, together with his partner Dena, also a successful company worker. He shares a relaxed, happy relationship with her. He is haunted, however, by his previous relationship, with Angela, a designer living in Melbourne. Having broken that relationship 18 months back to shift to Sydney to work, he now feels dismayed about that break, and wishes to make amends. Angela, in the meantime, is living a settled life back in Melbourne, without a partner. Robert impulsively breaks his ties with Sydney: he quits his job, packs his bags and drives to Melbourne, abandoning Dena. He arrives and stays with an old friend, Richard. He makes contact with Angela, employing slightly deceitful machinations (that is, not being fully honest), trying to re-engage with her. Emotionally, however, she has moved on from him, her heart no longer being in that space. For her, Robert's presence is slightly problematic, but not too big an issue. Disappointed by Angela's unresponsiveness, Robert suddenly feels guilt over Dena, and flies back to her. She, however, is unwilling to engage with him. So he goes back to Melbourne. He makes a sincere, passionate play for Angela, and she is forced to consider the situation. Unsure if she wants to put herself back in the emotional space of relating with him, she drives to the country for a few days, without telling him. Feeling she has abandoned him, Robert reluctantly drives back to Sydney. Nothing but emptiness there, however, he returns to Melbourne. At the same time, Angela also drives back to Melbourne. It is unclear whether they will resume their relationship, but they both have it in their hearts as a dream. © Bill Mousoulis 2008 |
