2005 - Saloni M presents The Shades of Love

As a migrant writer, jeltje has been working on themes of alienation and displacement, where the interest lies in uncovering elements of similarity rather than difference between the cultures of homeland (The Netherlands, Denmark) and the country of re-settlement (Australia).

Over the years, she has broadened her writing activities in collaborations with other performance poets as well as artists from other disciplines, especially musical improvisation.

In Saloni M she will be performing some of her own work, as well as a piece by the French poet Jacques Prevert (in French).

BIG HEART

little feet must not feel guilty, they’ve only had such

little time to walk about, to pace out their

little lives, little eyes see big things, mouths must say little a lot

BIG HEART little things,

BIG HEART BIG WORLD,

little heart, little world,

BIG BIG HEART little little world.

The heart is a big place.

Many little thoughts make up a BIG HEART,

IF WE STOP THINKING WE MAY LOSE HEART…!

I stopped thinking and

I lost Heart.

She was there, behind the thoughts

that were blocked out,

I think she was crying,

She thought no one could see her,

behind so many thoughts lumped together

in one solid mass…

Heart started banging, beating against

the STOP SIGNS,

Go, go, go! for the Heart!

She can be Elusive if stopped

for too long,

Starts beating somewhere,

against someone else’s door LET ME IN!

She cries, cannot see the STOP signs.
